People who are active need more fuel because their body's energy requirements must be met. The more physically active a person is, the more energy-rich foods they need to eat. The goal of working out should be to maintain a healthy body, but not at the cost of depleting the tissues of nutrients. Foods that are high in fat or sugars may provide some energy but will not meet your body's nutritional needs during exercise. Eat healthy foods before and after working out to increase the effectiveness of your exercise program.
Don't skip breakfast. The food you ate the night before will not sustain your energy levels through the morning. If you skip breakfast, you will not have the energy you need. People who exercise in the morning should eat a light breakfast to get their blood sugar levels up so that their muscles can perform properly. Eat foods like whole grain cereal, some low-fat milk, juice and a piece of fruit like berries or bananas. Your muscles and organs need fuel to sustain exercise. Exercising on an empty stomach can make you feel tired after a few minutes of exercise. You may even become light-headed or feel faint if you do not have enough fuel for your body to sustain physical exercise for more than a few minutes. A good mix of foods that include protein, fats and carbohydrates are necessary to increase the effectiveness of your exercise program. The more vigorous your workout, the more carbohydrates your body will burn for energy. The longer you exercise, the less glycogen you will have stored in your muscles.

A snack before exercise can help increase your blood sugar level and improve the effectiveness of your workout. Some energizing snack foods include fresh fruit, yogurt, and fruit drinks, whole grain breads and granola bars. You should eat something after moderate to vigorous exercise to restore blood sugar levels and to replace glycogen in the muscles. Eat carbohydrates and proteins after exercise. Have a healthy snack like cheese, yogurt and fruit immediately after a workout or eat a full meal within an hour after working out. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before and after exercise. Your body may become dehydrated during exercise. Inadequate fluids can prevent your body from functioning at peak levels. Drink up to 3 cups of water before exercising, 1 cup of water every 15 minutes during exercise and another 3 cups of water at the end of your workout. Sweating removes water from your body, so it's imperative that you replace lost water. Drink sports drinks that contain electrolytes and carbohydrates during long and strenuous workouts.
