"Acidophilus. I'm looking for acidophilus." This is something I hear on a daily basis when I am working in health food shops. But after a conversation with the customer, 99.9% of the time it turns out that they are actually looking for a probiotic, and not necessarily just acidophilus.
Probiotics are microorganisms which are deemed beneficial for the human host. A large amount of studies demonstrate that probiotics are good for digestion, for immunity, and for energy levels. New and exciting studies are beginning to link probiotics to stress and brain functioning, or to skin health including eczema and acne.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a type of probiotic. In fact, it is one of the most researched probiotic species in the world, and has been shown to promote good health in travellers, people with irregular bowels, those with food intolerances and more. Therefore, quite rightly, acidophilus is very good for you! However, this particular probiotic will naturally reside in your small intestine. Here, a high quality, well-researched strain of acidophilus will adhere to the gut wall lining, and multiply in numbers, exerting its beneficial effects on this part of the body.
If you simply take acidophilus however, you are only looking after your small intestine, (and also a woman's vaginal microflora) but the large intestine is not receiving the same help. This is why the vast majority of people would be better off taking a probiotic supplement which contains various species and strains of probiotics, including those from the Bifidobacteria family which will settle in the large intestine.
When it comes to probiotics, it is extremely important to understand that one probiotic is not equal to another. Some probiotic products on the market contain insufficient amounts of bacteria, others are packed full of sugar, and others are hugely worthwhile! It is also important to understand that one probiotic species is not the same as another, just as one probiotic strain is not the same as another. It seems confusing; there is an awful lot to learn about this area of microbiology; but a good start is to know that acidophilus is a type of probiotic, and not the only probiotic.
